- On 10 August 2023, a freight train derailed while travelling through the Gotthard Base Tunnel, causing extensive damage to the tunnel infrastructure. No one was injured and no hazardous materials were released.
- Following the derailment, the tunnel was closed to most passenger traffic and most passenger trains had to be diverted. The Gotthard Base Tunnel has been open to passenger and freight trains again without restriction since 2 September 2024.
- For passengers, this means that they can get from German-speaking Switzerland to Ticino an hour faster. Trains are now running every half hour throughout the day.
- During the period of limited operation, the Night GA Travelcard and the seven25 annual Travelcard were valid from 6pm every day for journeys to or from Ticino for customers living in Ticino and the valleys of Mesolcina and Calanca (Graubünden). This measure was lifted when the Gotthard Base Tunnel was fully reopened on 2 September 2024 and the Travelcards are now valid from 7pm as before.

The derailment in the Gotthard Base Tunnel on 10 August 2023 had a major impact on rail traffic. However, rail operations through the tunnel resumed in full on 2 September 2024, and passenger trains are now running every half hour.

The Gotthard Base Tunnel has been fully operational again since 2 September 2024 and passenger trains are now running every half hour. This means that passengers can once again get from Zurich to Lugano and vice versa in under two hours. You can find the exact connections in the online timetable or on SBB Mobile.
Since 2 September 2024, all direct connections to Italy have also been back in service. This means you can reach not only Milan and Venice, but also Genoa and Bologna comfortably and without changing trains from Switzerland. The trinational connection from Frankfurt to Milan is also running again, with the Swiss high-speed train “Giruno” now being used on the route.
