SBB conducts regular maintenance work on the line to keep trains running smoothly and on time. This includes Zurich Airport station, where eight rail road switsches are being replaced. To reduce the impact on passengers and local residents, SBB is completing the work over four consecutive weekends.
Weekends affected:
- Friday, 17 January, 11.01pm, until Monday, 20 January 2025, start of operations
- Friday, 24 January, 11.01pm, until Monday, 27 January 2025, start of operations
- Friday, 31 January, 11.01pm, until Monday, 3 February 2025, start of operations
- Friday, 7 February, 11.01pm, until Monday, 10 February 2025, start of operations
The construction work will lead to cancellations and timetable changes for long-distance and regional services on the Zurich main station to Winterthur route.
SBB recommends that all passengers check the connections in the online timetable or SBB mobile app before each journey. These are updated accordingly and always suggest the best connections. SBB will also inform customers of changes to the timetable via on-train announcements and by means of advertising, disruption and service status screens at the station. - During this time, long-distance EC trains to and from Munich, the IC1, IC5, IC8/IC81, RE8, IR75, RE75 and the IR13 between Zurich main station/Zurich Oerlikon and Winterthur will be diverted with no extension of journey time and will not stop at Zurich Airport.
- IR36 trains will not serve the section between Zurich Oerlikon and Zurich Airport and will terminate at Zurich Oerlikon.
- Passengers heading from Zurich main station to Zurich Airport should use the S2 S-Bahn service. Special trains will be in operation for passengers from Zurich Airport to Zurich main station, as well as from Zurich Airport to Winterthur and from Winterthur to Zurich Airport.
- The S2 and special trains will run every 30 minutes. During the construction work, the journey from Zurich main station and Winterthur to Zurich Airport is expected to take between 10 to 20 minutes longer.
- The S11 between Zurich main station and Winterthur will be cancelled. Passengers should use long-distance services when travelling from Zurich main station to Winterthur; for journeys to Zurich Stadelhofen and Stettbach, they should use alternative regional services.
- The S3 between Zurich main station and Zurich Hardbrücke will be cancelled. Passengers should use alternative regional transport services.
- The S7 will make a special stop in Kemptthal.
- The S16 between Zurich Oerlikon and Zurich Airport will be cancelled. Passengers should use the S2 or special trains.
- The S24 between Zurich Oerlikon and Effretikon will be cancelled. Passengers to Bassersdorf and Effretikon should use the S7. Passengers from Zurich Oerlikon to Zurich Airport should use the S2. Passengers from Effretikon to Zurich Airport should take the S7 to Bassersdorf and change there.
- The S2 will be diverted to Zurich Airport from Zurich Oerlikon and will make a special stop in Bassersdorf. This will add approximately 10 minutes to the journey time.
- The tram service between Zurich Oerlikon and Zurich Airport will be more frequent during the construction work.
